I made my maps for my website by running it in a DOS window in Win95, before
I salvaged the Win95 drive and went totally Linux. You call it up, have it
make the map you want, then ALT-PRNTSCRN to push it onto a buffer. Exit back
to Windows, & paste the map into Paint, & save. Convert it to GIF using XV
or Xpaint.

Mick was going to be working on a SVGALIB version after porting it to FPK,
but he kinda dissappeared over the Australian summer there... If you *DON'T*
have FPK yet, *GET IT*!!! It's a TP workalike for Linux & Windoze. It's at:

That's Mark Nordstrand's suite. I'm one of the betabashers. It's

I took a fresh look at the problem. The fudge factor I gave
earlier was based on some other estimates and may not be
reliable. PE, IS, and TNE Path of Tears all give different but
hopefully somewhat related estimates for a planet's military
forces. I took my "best" numbers for Sylea's UWP, figured its
military with each approach, and compared them. After some
grumbling and headscratching, I have some revised fudge factors
for conversion among these.

1] Starship squadrons are a base 1 Trillion Credits. IS gives
more detail on a planet's military establishment: PE includes
support and maintenance expenses in addition to new construction.
2] IS combat and transportation factors for starships are about
1/10 of 1 PE combat factor. I ignored Jump Factors and Depot
(base) transportation factors, but included Starship
transportation factors.
3] Figure SDB squadrons are 1 Billion credits each, with the
limits IS gives.
4] Each SDB squadron is 1/100 of a PE Combat ATT or DEF point
for space forces.
5] Defense Battalions in IS correspond to Combined COACC and
Ground forces at the rate of about 1 PE combat ATT or DEF point
per 70 battalion equivalents or so. (Troops carried aboard ships
are a lot more expensive.)
6] These fudge factors coulld be adjusted 50% in either
direction and still be about the right order of magnitude.

>Can you give me the UPP of Sylea (I don't own any T4 other than
>IS, PE, and FF&S2). I'd like to see what I get using the IS
>system.

Which UPP do you want? <G> I have four.
The T4 main rulebook gives
Core 0201 Sylea A586A98-C HiPop NS xxx
(It has its own version of Core sector)
In the text, Milieu 0 (M:0) gives it as
Core 2118 Sylea A586A98-C population 14 billion.
In the referee data for M:0 and in First Survey, it is given as
Core 2118 Sylea A586A98-C HiPop 305 G2 V
On the web I found a "corrected" version of First Survey, (core
sector only) which gives:
Core 2118 Sylea A586530-C Ag Ni 305 G2 V

All sources considered, the "best" data for Sylea in Imperial year 0
seems to be:
Core 2118 Sylea A586A98-C HiPop NS 105 G2 V
MTU is slightly earlier than M:0 with Sylea still at TL-11.

Wow, that was a really intriguing read. Thanks for the URL, but I have one
query. I saw on the page about plasma control a reference to "high field
tokamaks", shouldn't this be "high yield tokamaks"? Not to be picky, great
page! :)

Well,

- - The granddaddy of them all, I think, is Galactic. wonderful program, IMHO.
- - Jo Grant has done some work, as you said...
- - Then there is Rob Prior's work for you Mac users...the CSC program, GT
Shipyard, and Metator (sp?).

And there are a few of us working on things (like the excellent World
Builder Deluxe), but its rather hard to churn something out when the real
world (job, wife, kids, health) interfere. I'm releasing an early beta of
some Java 2 Traveller programs for GURPS Traveller, but I don't expect it to
be ready for prime time for a while.

Also keep your eye out for spreadsheets - there are a ton of them out there
(insert shameless plug here for my FF&S spreadsheet). There are WBH sheets,
ship design from all rule sets, pocket empires, etc..tons of stuff...

You just gotta look for it :)

I just downloaded and played around with v.5 and I liked what I saw. I use
WBD quite a bit and I am glad that the new version is even more useful.

My only gripe is the green text on black. I prefered the old black text on
white. <shrug> A minor detail, since I export the data.

Regardless, keep up the good work.

I am looking forward to all of those new features, but I have to say that I
like 'c' the best.

That would be my fault Keith :) When Stuart and I talked about doing some
graphics for it, I came up with the green print on black for the system
mapper. It was black on white (too harsh in my opinion for the mapping),
and suggested green on black. After I sent a comp to the WBD development
list with this scheme, everyone liked it and Stuart went with it.

Look at the bright side (for FS, that is, not for Terrans). Given the
state of Solomani space exploration in the last years of the 20th
century, they may have found it, but they aren't going to _get_ any of
it for quite some time. Plenty of time left for FS to siphon off the
good stuff....

I have a question for you nice peoples out there, yes I do include the
Vargr, the Zho, the Sols, the Imps, the Aslan, the K'Kree, etc, but not the
dirty Hivers.

Do you use rules from Traveller in other games? For example, I also
enjoy playing Rifts - Phase World & Macross II, both from Palladium & I have
turn Rifts - Phase World into a quasi-Traveller game. I.e. I have used the
General Background from Phase World, but use many of the ships, Mega-Corps,
Trade & Commerce Rules, World Building Rules & Mappers (World , Sector
Mappers (Galactic 2.4), etc to fill in the gaps in what they have presented.
Has anyone else done this?

the ground be sufficient to incinerate something the size of the Hubble?
Say firing time is in the 3 to 6 second range. Or would the energy level
have to be higher? Doing a reality-check on a game situation and was
wondering. Thanks.

1800 RPM. How quaint! The units on the Urenco site were tested for normal
operation at up to 700 Hz (42,000 rpm) when I worked in the field. I know
the intent was to push this beyond 800 Hz with the generation of carbon
composites they were using. Speed is much more effective than mass in
increasing the power density. Of course, you can gang up a set of these
units in a modular fashion (albeit needing some 75 to 100 to get the same
total *useable* energy). These units weigh in at <1000 kg IIRC, and are
around 500mm dia, 1m height.

Out of interest, does your HPG run to rest when discharging, or do you run
it between resonances to increase life? With the speed and mass quoted I'd
guess you're using a metal based unit, which has some material strength
limits?

Gearhead challenge: Why is the flycylinder arrangement inherently more safe
than the flywheel (disk arrangement)?

BTW - the fusion stuff looks interesting!

before the encumbrance penalty, or after. I think after.

Excuse me while I take a page from Jeff's book and make an update =
announcement about my website...

I have put a copy of Marc's announcement about the collector edition of =
CT on the News page at the site ( http://downport.com/news ) and took =
the opportunity to opine in the Editorial section about it ( =
http://downport.com/point ). I expect it to have a positive effect on =
the game overall. I welcome opposing or different views and will =
publish one if you care to vent :-)

At the beginning of July I made a major change to the NavBar on the left =
side of the pages. I decided to use a little of the JavaScript that I =
have been learning to give it a more professional look. I hope that I =
did not overdo. I try to keep the load times for pages very low and to =
keep the layout clean.

Another change was separating The Traveller Trader ( =
http://surf.to/traveller-trader ) from the normal flow of things so that =
it has it's own identity. I've been making some collection purchases =
lately, so there will be an influx of new materials throughout the =
month. Currently there are several adventures and supplements just in: =
FASA, Paranoia Press, Group One and Judges Guild titles. Most are out =
of a dusty corner of a warehouse and are unopened.

I should also mention for those of you with Traveller Webring sites that =
the home page, signup and graphics for the Ring are now located at =
http://downport.com/webring=20

I'll end with a reiteration of our standing offer to host Traveller =
related content. Don't let good material hang out at the end of a long =
URL on a lost server somewhere. Let us place it in the center of the =
public square at Downport.com!

Thank you for your time and attention.
